Desert blues

I took this aerial with my Mavic 2 Pro drone over the desert of Utah. I had poured over satellite maps looking for potential subjects, and this particular drainage caught my eye because of the patterns and colors. So, I found a road that got me close enough so I could fly my drone over this formation. Of course, it looks a lot different now than it does on the view snapped by a satellite presumably several years ago!

Love the organic feel and the various blue tones you've captured in this image! I'm wondering if this was shot at a very high altitude because of the lack of any identifiable landmarks.

Hi Paula, I can't recall how high I was flying my drone above the land here, but it was likely somewhere between 300-400 feet above the landscape. It was actually a relatively small drainage area, just some eroded channels carved into the desert from flash floods. Thanks!

  • I found some eroded badlands formations on public land 15 miles away from Badlands National Park in South Dakota (since I wasn't in the park, I could legally fly my drone here). Flew my Mavic 2 Pro up at sunrise to capture this image. Sunrise light is hitting the cliffs at the bottom of the image, while the rest of the formations were still in shadow and had a cooler color cast to them, allowing me to play with the complementary colors.
  • I've been following the new Lal Lal windfarm on a regular basis for quite a few months now and on Friday morning I got the conditions I've been chasing. This is close to the city of Ballarat, Victoria Australia
  • I had so much fun photographing icebergs in Greenland. I used my DJI Mavic 2 Pro drone to fly around this interesting berg, shooting it from many photogenic angles during a seemingly endless sunset.
