Interesting shot, but for me if the Tree is supposed to be the main subject, I might have moved to a different location
For me the image has a lot of possibility and I would go back again to keep working on it. I like the tree the grasses and the lake and I get what you are doing with the foreground middle and back. The lack of detail in the sky is a problem in that my eye keeps going up to look at it. A graduate neutral density filter may have helped bring the sky back. Over all the images lack contrast, so I suspect it would have been later morning? Early afternoon? I would try going back very early in the day or later to obtain a more softer light. To the other comment, I would have moved to the left just a little to get the tree in that almost open area of the cattails. If there was the possibility of shooting from a higher vantage point, that might work also. But I do like the location and the possibilities it presents.
I think Gail has a very good suggestion in moving left so the tree appears in the break in the cattails. Here the cattails almost cover part of tree, which is the subject of the photo. In Gail's version, the cattails would frame the tree giving it added weight. Also a more interesting light would help the sky.
