Hi everyone, just joining in on the #unleash Photo Challenge fun! If you don't know about the Photo Challenge yet, you can learn more about it here. This is a photo of a Maasai man taken at night at the safari camp I was visiting during a trip to Kenya's Masai Mara a few years back.
The Maasai are a wonderfully generous people. I asked him if I could take his photo, and he responded by asking me if I wanted him to get his spear. Now, when someone asks you if you want to photograph them holding a spear, you say "yes!" for two reasons: 1) A spear always makes everything much more cool, and 2) you never say "no" to someone with a spear. I asked him to stand as still as possible during a 30-second exposure, which was set to capture the moonlit clouds in the background. I used flash to illuminate the man, bringing out the colors of his robe and freezing him during the long exposure. I posed him next to the wildebeest skull that was on the fence post, further enhancing his epic coolness. :)
