I took this picture at a wildlife refuge in southern Wisconsin. I tried to get the colors as I remember them in post processing. Any critique on that or composition would be welcomed.
Hi Gary, nice portrait and nice caption! And welcome to Shuttermonkeys! Two things come to my mind, it is a bit tight and sometimes a wider view can help tell more of a story. Ian has a new post on this topic here: https://www.shuttermonkeys.com/forum/wildlife-photography/take-a-wider-view-with-wildlife. And regarding the colors, the photo looks a bit underexposed to me, so everything seems a little darker than what I expect. I know it's tricky to balance the exposure with the bright blue sky, but maybe try brightening the image a little?
First comment guys, hope to contribute more as the site grows. Zac has made a good point, more tells more story...or tighter tells another story. The left of the head is uninteresting. Crop it out completely and bring in the right, too. Look at that hair! If I didn't know it was a bird I'd think it was a porcupine! and that's what interests me. When looking at the background it appears to be uninteresting and adds nothing to the image. All I want to see is more hair! Great focus Gary. And Gary, the colors do not have to match reality, just your reality. Good job.
