You may be wondering why, and how, I got this extremely close-up face shot of a new grizzly cub. So here’s the story; I was photographing the mom and her new cub for a few days. They had been consistently feeding close to a road in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. This particular day the mom and cub were pretty far up the hill eating an elk calf, well the mom was, at this age the cub is still a vegan. Anyway, my van was parked along the highway and we waited as the bears were behind a tree BEARLY visible.
I didn’t realize I was parked right next to a spring and when the bears started down the hill for water they came right to my van! I jumped back in the van and started shooting through the side door. I was shooting a 300mm focal length lens on a crop sensor! I had the 70-200 right beside me but with all the excitement I couldn’t switch think fast enough. I have so many shots with the ears or nose cropped off of both the cub and the mama bear.
After their drink they crossed the highway and I was able to shoot some video. I caught a great clip of them playing that I call Rag Doll. You can see why here https://youtu.be/5MA2oPcLroQ
